How do I know if a Sinterklaas book is okay?

Zarissa from Cargo Confetti explains in this blog article which Sinterklaas books are okay. It uses the following criteria for this:

  • Pete:
    • Are there black shots in the story?
    • Are they called that or are they renamed with a creative name while little has changed in appearance?
  • Imaging:
    • How is Piet portrayed?
    • Stereotypical images (frizzy hair, all black, thick lips…) are definitely not okay. As well as the gold ring earrings associated with the slavery past.
  • Story content:
    • How are the Petes described?
    • Are negative qualities attributed? (Pete is lazy, stupid, etc.).
    • How are problems presented, understood and solved?
    • Are marginalized people considered 'the problem'?
  • Power Ratio:
    • How is the relationship between Sint and Piet?
    • Are they friends or is Piet really treated as a servant?
    • There must be an equal, balanced relationship between Piet and Sint.
