How do I know if a Sinterklaas book is okay?
Zarissa from Cargo Confetti explains in this blog article which Sinterklaas books are okay. It uses the following criteria for this:
- Pete:
- Are there black shots in the story?
- Are they called that or are they renamed with a creative name while little has changed in appearance?
- Imaging:
- How is Piet portrayed?
- Stereotypical images (frizzy hair, all black, thick lips…) are definitely not okay. As well as the gold ring earrings associated with the slavery past.
- Story content:
- How are the Petes described?
- Are negative qualities attributed? (Pete is lazy, stupid, etc.).
- How are problems presented, understood and solved?
- Are marginalized people considered 'the problem'?
- Power Ratio:
- How is the relationship between Sint and Piet?
- Are they friends or is Piet really treated as a servant?
- There must be an equal, balanced relationship between Piet and Sint.
