Choosing freedom: Teaching package

'Artists are freebooters who only do what they feel like, regardless of social conventions or social usefulness': that is the opinion of many lay people in art. The reality is much more nuanced. Artists are children of their time, accept the society in which they live or rebel against it, they make use of new insights and materials or go back to times gone by. Their innovative insights sometimes clash with mainstream thinking.

Commissioned work was the norm for centuries and is still a common practice. Regardless of the client, the freedom of an artist is like that of each of us.

In addition to individuals, peoples also strive for freedom. This often results in a revolution and the establishment of new customs. Artists rally behind one of the parties and record the (anti)revolutionary thoughts.

In Opting for freedom you will find photos of works of art, video and text material, questions, assignments, tips for continuing to work in class on the theme of Art and freedom. The material can be used separately or combined as you see fit, cross-curricular work is possible.
