Tablets in primary education: Inspiration Guide

As part of its ICT and digital media policy, the Department of Education set up networks of innovative schools. These networks consist of at least ten schools that during the school year 2013-2014 tried out new technologies and exchanged their experiences with other schools in the network.

One of the main content issues of the network was working with tablets. Tablet classes and schools where each student has their own tablet, notebook or laptop, are also on the rise in Flanders. The schools from the Network of Innovative Schools investigated what the preconditions, the learning potential, the stumbling stones, etc. are. Their findings can be found in this brochure.

An important objective is to share the experience, expertise and know-how gained with the broad educational field. The guide you can download below is one result. The schools functioned as examples of good practice for this. They combined their experiences in concrete tips and recommendations that are distributed to the broad educational field. This guide full of concrete tips and feasible teaching ideas will provide inspiration for schools that think of teaching in contemporary learning environments with tablets or where each student has their own device.

The examples in this publication represent feasible initiatives for every school and teacher. They also fit seamlessly with the final objectives and are chosen in such a way that they usually go further than the subject in which they were developed. They are easily transferable and can be applied in different subject areas or learning areas, educational forms and years of study. Furthermore, it was decided to work with a limited number of apps or media that are easy to find, that were effectively tested and in which the participating schools saw a clear educational value.
