EU-voorzitterschap
Van 1 januari tot 30 juni 2024 is België voorzitter van de Raad van de Europese Unie. Ook Vlaanderen zal daarin een belangrijke rol spelen. Zo zal het België vertegenwoordigen als voorzitter voor de luiken Industrie, Jeugd, Cultuur, Media en Visserij.
EU-voorzitterschap = voorzitterschap Raad van de Europese Unie
De Raad van de Europese Unie is, samen met het Europees Parlement, de wetgever van de Europese Unie.
De Raad bestaat uit de nationale ministers van de 27 lidstaten van de Europese Unie. De Raad wordt bij toerbeurt voorgezeten door één van de lidstaten, telkens voor een termijn van zes maanden. De lidstaat heeft dan het voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie. De voorzittende lidstaat leidt de vergaderingen op de verschillende niveaus en treedt op als neutrale bemiddelaar om tot compromissen te komen voor de besluitvorming in de Raad.
Om te zorgen voor continuïteit in de werkzaamheden van de Raad, werken de zesmaandelijkse voorzitterschappen per groep van drie nauw samen.

De rol van Vlaanderen
Van 1 januari tot 30 juni 2024 is België voorzitter van de Raad van de Europese Unie. Binnen dit EU-voorzitterschap zal Vlaanderen een belangrijke rol spelen. De bevoegdheidsverdeling in België tussen de federale overheid en de gewesten en gemeenschappen, geldt immers ook op EU-niveau (het “in foro interno, in foro externo” principe). In de domeinen waarvoor Vlaanderen bevoegd is, bepaalt het mee de standpunten die België inneemt in de Raad en kunnen Vlaamse ministers België vertegenwoordigen in de Raad.
In het EU-voorzitterschap van 2024 zal Vlaanderen België vertegenwoordigen als voorzitter van de Raad van de EU voor de luiken Industrie, Jeugd, Cultuur, Media en Visserij. Concreet wil dat zeggen dat Vlaamse ministers en experten de Raadsvergaderingen over die domeinen zullen voorzitten. Bovendien zullen zij tijdens de zes maanden de Raad vertegenwoordigen in de andere EU-instellingen en in multilateraal verband.
Naast het voorzitterschap, neemt Vlaanderen ook de Belgische stoel op als woordvoerder voor de luiken Interne markt, Volksgezondheid, Vervoer, Onderwijs, Sport, Visserij en Landbouw (in naam van België). Tot slot zal Vlaanderen ook in andere domeinen zijn verantwoordelijkheden en bevoegdheden optimaal invullen door onder andere expertise aan te leveren, standpunten mee te bepalen en eigen vergaderingen en evenementen te organiseren.
