Can I do something about it?: Workshop for the class

Every year, more than 40,000 people in Flanders are diagnosed with cancer. This means that in every class there is someone who experiences cancer firsthand. How do you deal with that as a teacher?

We made the class game Can I do something about it? to provide an answer to that question and to make cancer a topic of discussion, on behalf of Kom op tegen Kanker , in collaboration with Cartamundi and with support from the Flemish Government.

Game description
In the game, students are introduced to one of two characters, each of whom is confronted with cancer in their environment. Either the story revolves around Ada and her grandfather, who has cancer, or the game revolves around Finn, whose teacher is no longer at school after the holidays for the same reason. There are two different stories possible, so that as a teacher you can choose which story best suits the class.

The players join the emotional rollercoaster that Ada and Finn experience and gradually learn about cancer itself, what treatments are available and they discover how they can support people with cancer where necessary.

Goal

  • The players gain insight into the question 'What is cancer?'.
  • The players understand that people can get cancer and that they are not to blame.
  • The players name the emotions they may experience when dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
  • The players are introduced to various cancer treatments.
  • The players think about what they can do for someone who has cancer.
  • The players identify what can help them when they are having a hard time themselves.
