Mathematics plan: A curriculum by and for mathematics teachers

In 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, the third and fourth years of secondary education were modernized respectively. Within the transfer finality (more or less the former ASO), five hours of mathematics became the standard, with some specializations that exceptionally only received four hours of mathematics. There was a separate curriculum for both directions.

Unexpectedly, the umbrella organization for Catholic education decided at the end of February 2023 that four hours of mathematics will become the new standard within that finality, with only one direction with five hours as an exception. It is even more incomprehensible that there appears to be no curriculum for that five-hour course: at the moment there are only non-enforceable optional goals.

That was the starting point of our company: a full-fledged five-hour curriculum for the second grade of writing, supplemented with a six-hour curriculum for the third grade.

We have consciously chosen to write curricula by and for teachers. We combine our decades of experience in the classroom with recent scientific insights from further training and literature.
The curriculum for directions with five hours of mathematics in the second grade prepares for the curriculum for directions with at least six hours in the third grade. Both form a coherent whole.

The Mathematics Plan has been approved and it is now an official curriculum alongside all other curricula and can therefore be used throughout Flanders.
