Sound Painting: The Art of Live Composition

This website is based on the composer who invented sound painting. You will find tips for getting started with sound painting: workbooks, blog posts, media, but you will also find a short summary of the history of sound painting.

Sound painting is the universal multidisciplinary live composing sign language for musicians, actors, dancers and visual artists. Currently (2023) the language includes more than 1500 gestures signed by the soundpainter (composer) to indicate the type of material desired from the performers. The creation of the composition is realized by the sound painter through the parameters of each set of signed gestures. The language of sound painting was created in 1974 by Walter Thompson in Woodstock, New York.
